Press Release: Inter-Regional Symposium on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights


State Agency on Intellectual Property of the Republic of Moldova (AGEPI) in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), organizes on 23-24 October this year the Inter-Regional Symposium on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights. The symposium will be held in Chisinau, in the Conference Hall of the Palace of the Republic, starting at 10.00 (2nd floor, entrance from Maria Cebotari street).

The Inter-Regional Symposium is organized under the sign of the twentieth anniversary from the foundation of AGEPI and creation of the national system of intellectual property and fits fully in the events organized by AGEPI in the Public Campaign “STOP Piracy and Counterfeiting!”

Moldova benefits from the status of host country of this Symposium due to successes achieved in the development of the National System of protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights and sustained efforts to counter piracy and counterfeiting phenomena.

The aim of the mentioned Symposium is to strengthen the system of enforcement of intellectual property rights in the Republic of Moldova and the region and to expand inter-regional cooperation between institutions responsible for the given area.

The participants in the symposium will discuss the most pressing issues related to the enforcement of rights at the international and national level, will be familiar with the best practices in this field and will make an exchange of views on the tools used in the countries they represent to strengthen the institutional capacity of national authorities responsible for this area.

The meeting will be attended by senior officials of WIPO, representatives of national authorities responsible for the enforcement of intellectual property rights and intellectual property offices from 35 countries of Europe and Asia, namely: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Switzerland, Estonia, Russian Federation, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, United Kingdom, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Republic of Moldova, People’s Republic of China, Republic of Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, Uzbekistan.

From our country to the event were invited specialists of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Prosecutor General’s Office, Customs Service, Supreme Court of Justice, AGEPI, Competition Council, Broadcasting Coordinating Council, Consumer Protection Agency, National Association of Private Information and Communications Technology Companies, partners of the Public Consumer Awareness Campaign “STOP Piracy and Counterfeiting!”, etc.

At the opening of this important international forum will take part Mr. Dorin RECEAN, Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Dr. Francis GURRY, Director General of WIPO, and Ms. Lilia BOLOCAN, Director General of AGEPI.

The international experts will inform the participants with reference to modern instruments to strengthen management capacity of intellectual property rights in transition countries, which is one of the strategic objectives of WIPO and will present the Organization’s recommendations in this area.

The experts will also address topics such as building respect for intellectual property, consumer protection strategies, enforcement of intellectual property rights at the border, ecological destruction of counterfeit goods, etc.

A separate point on the Symposium agenda is the cooperation between the public and private sectors in the field of enforcement of intellectual property rights.

In line with the Symposium program, Moldova’s experience on the enforcement of intellectual property rights, the strategies, trends and new challenges will be presented by Mr. Ion TIGANAS, Deputy Director General of AGEPI.

At the end of the Symposium will be a round table, during which will be discussed the prospects of development of the system of protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights at the regional and national level.
