Meeting of the Observatory on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights

Today, February 17, 2015, at the AGEPI was held a working meeting of the Observatory on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights to which were invited representatives of the Swedish Embassy in Chisinau, in the person of Mrs. Ambassador Ingrid Tersman and Deputy Head of the Swedish Mission in Chisinau, Mrs. Paola Albornoz.

The round table was organized in the context of the need to prevent and combat piracy as widespread social phenomenon in the Republic of Moldova, in particular, location of servers of the largest Swedish website of indexation of the Pirate Bay torrent files in the Republic of Moldova.

In opening, AGEPI Director General, Mrs. Lilia Bolocan welcomed the presence of guests and stressed the importance of enforcement of intellectual property rights in the online environment.

In continuation of the meeting, Mr. Ion Tiganas, Deputy Director General of AGEPI and Chairman of the Observatory on Enforcement of IPR made an analysis of the national legislation on the enforcement of copyright in the online environment and also presented the problems faced and the results achieved by the Republic of Moldova in this area (Torrent.eu/torrents.md/pirate bay).

In the same context, the Prosecutor General’s Office representative brought to notice some data about the phenomenon of piracy in Moldova, which are the problems arising in the fight against piracy in the institution he represents, and also what are the results of cooperation with national and international institutions in the given field.

Her Excellency, Mrs. Ambassador of Sweden in Chisinau and Deputy Head of the Swedish Mission in Chisinau brought up the Swedish national strategy to combat cyber crimes, noting that in Sweden there is a close cooperation between the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the executive body, however, being Agency for Emergency Situations which has a department responsible for the protection of online environment.

In continuation of the meeting, it was proposed to establish links/contact points between specialized bodies in this field in Moldova and Sweden, in order to identify and solve problems in real time. Mrs. Ambassador Tersman announced her readiness to cooperate with institutions in Sweden and to negotiate in order to establish the possibility of granting technical assistance, information and expertise from Sweden to Republic of Moldova.
