AGEPI participated in the 36th Session of the Committee of Experts of the Nice Union

05/05/2026

The State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) participated from April 27 to May 1 in the 36th session of the Committee of Experts of the Nice Union (CLIM/CE/36 Committee), held in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting aimed to examine and update the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks, in accordance with current trends and requirements.

The work of the CLIM/CE/36 Committee was attended by representatives of the Member States of the Union, international governmental and non-governmental organizations. The work was led by Andreas Ostlund (Sweden), with the Secretariat being provided by Alison Zuger (WIPO). The Republic of Moldova was represented by Victoria Pulbere, Deputy Head of the Trademarks and Industrial Design Directorate of AGEPI.

Over the five days, proposals submitted for this session were reviewed, including the introduction of new terms, the modification and transfer of existing ones. The proposals were discussed and put to a vote, and the final decisions determined the inclusion or exclusion of each term.

The full agenda of the session can be found at: https://www.wipo.int/edocs/mdocs/classifications/en/clim_ce_36/clim_ce_36_1_prov_2.pdf.

One of the major topics on the meeting’s agenda was the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the Nice Classification, with practical experiences presented by three intellectual property offices. The representative of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Fabian Garcia Quinto, presented how AI tools are integrated into both front and back office processes.

Organizations such as the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the Japan Association of Industrial Property Attorneys (JPAA) also issued statements emphasizing the importance of adapting the Nice Classification to the rapid evolution of digital technologies and AI, in order to ensure greater clarity and predictability in international trademark practice.

All amendments accepted during the current session will enter into force on 1 January 2027 (NCL13-2027).
