Roundtable “Management of Intellectual Property by Museums”

12/05/2014

On December 5, 2014, in the conference hall of the National Museum of History of Moldova was held the roundtable “Management of Intellectual Property by Museums”. The roundtable was opened by Mrs. Lilia Bolocan, Director General of AGEPI, who in her speech stressed the importance of museums in public education. Also, a word of greeting was addressed by Mr. Eugen Sava, Director General of the National Museum of History of Moldova, who welcomed the AGEPI initiative to organize such actions for the most important museums of the country.

Employees of museum institutions in the municipality Chisinau (National Museum of History of Moldova, National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, National Museum of Art and others) have been provided by the specialists of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) relevant aspects on the benefits of protection, enforcement and use of intellectual property rights.

The meeting aimed at promoting the role and importance of intellectual property for economic, social and cultural development of the country and raising the culture in society in the field of intellectual property.

A report about management of intellectual property of museums was presented by Mr. Ion Tiganas, Dr. of Law and Deputy Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI). In particular, it was emphasized that in the present context, a modern museum institution is to revise the management strategy of intellectual property objects that it owns. The need for such an approach is dictated by the legal use of museum pieces, as well as opportunities of identifying business models and economic benefits offered by the intellectual property system. Thus, through the management of intellectual property, museum objects can generate additional revenues and the use thereof should not affect the rights of third parties.

Finally, the participants in the roundtable have been distributed sets of information materials in the field of IP, including WIPO publication “Guide on Managing IP for Museums”.
