Acknowledging the economic importance of intellectual property, the exploitation of which remains an underdeveloped area in our country, the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) in common with other public authorities, over the last years conducts several actions to redress the current situation.
An important step in this direction was the creation in 2011 of the Observatory on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights, whose primary purpose is to ensure the exchange of data between authorities responsible for the enforcement of intellectual property rights, as well as generate reports, analytical and statistical studies in the field.
In order to fulfill its duties, and also in order to ensure the continuity of monitoring the phenomena of counterfeiting and piracy, in the Observatory was realized for the third consecutive year the Report on the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in the Republic of Moldova for 2014.
According to data presented, during the year 2014 was recorded a decrease of the indicators related to actions by law-enforcement authorities, which is largely due to lack of interest from right holders. At the same time, in 2014 there was an increase in cases of prosecution for violation of intellectual property rights, and also in the number of proceedings examined in courts.
Also, according to information presented in the Report, during 2014 were carried out a series of actions to promote enforcement of intellectual property rights, the most important being:
- Pupil Awareness Campaign on Counterfeiting and Piracy Phenomena
- Seminars and trainings for representatives of the law-enforcement authorities
- Study visits abroad to take over the best practice
The national report is the mirror of the way in which intellectual property rights are enforced in the Republic of Moldova, considering that measures the status quo and dynamics of criminal offence, as well as that identifies the causes and conditions of violation the rights, the consequences of this phenomenon and society reaction strategy.
