AGEPI Delegation Participated in the International Conference “Protection of Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin” in Georgia

In the period of 3-4 October 2013, in Tbilisi, Georgia, was held the International Conference “Protection of Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin”, organized by the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (SAKPATENTI) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The conference was attended by delegations from France, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Republic of Belarus, Romania, United States, Ukraine, Hungary, and the delegation of the Republic of Moldova, consisting of the Director General of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) Lilia Bolocan and Director of the Trademarks, Industrial Designs Department of AGEPI Simion Levitchi.

WIPO representative presented in his report the latest trends in the evolution of the Lisbon System for the International Registration of Appellations of Origin. Also, the participants in the conference heard an analysis report on the protection of appellations of origin and geographical indications in the EU countries. The audience was informed that the EU negotiates and signs bilateral agreements with several countries, from 2012 being in force the Agreement with Georgia and from 2013 - with the Republic of Moldova, thus ensuring mutual protection of geographical indications.

SAKPATENTI representative reported on the results achieved by Georgia in the field of protection of geographical indications. Thus, 37appellations of origin and geographical indications are currently registered in Georgia. It works intensively to register/protect Georgian appellations of origin and geographical indications in other states. For this it uses the international registration under the Lisbon Agreement, national registration in such countries as Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, Republic of Belarus, and bilateral agreements (with the EU, Ukraine).

Moldovan delegation mentioned that in August 2013 were issued the first certificates on the right to use the protected geographical indications (PGI) CODRU and DIVIN, being already at the stage of completion and the procedure for examination of geographical indications STEFAN VODA and VALUL LUI TRAIAN. It was pointed out that one of the objectives of the Action Plan for 2012-2014 on implementation of the National Intellectual Property Strategy until 2020 consists of the continuous development of the national system of protection of geographical indications and appellations of origin, through their national and international registration.
