The Workshop on Ex Officio Certification and Control of Agricultural Products with Geographical Indications was held at AGEPI


The Workshop entitled “Implementation of European Union Quality Policy (PDO, PGI, STG). Ex Officio Certification and Control” was held on 25 July this year at the headquarters of the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI).

The event was organized in the framework of the Action Plan on implementation of the Technical Assistance Project “Support to Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in the Republic of Moldova” funded by the European Union. The workshop was chaired by Lilia Bolocan, AGEPI Director General.

The event was attended by specialists from public institutions and authorities with responsibilities in the field of protection of geographical indications, designations of origin and traditional specialties guaranteed, as well as quality control of products with GI, including representatives of AGEPI, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Moldova, National Accreditation Center of the Republic of Moldova, National Agency for Food Safety, Agency for Consumer Protection and the NGO “ProRuralInvest”. The team of European experts responsible for project implementation was also present.

According to the event’s agenda, the EU expert in the field of geographical indications, Dariusz Goszczyński, presented the main elements of European Union’s policy on agricultural product quality and the role of public institutions. Later, Dariusz Goszczyński spoke about quality assurance - control and certification as the main element of the system; verifying compliance with product specifications with DO, GI, STG, EU requirements in this area. In order to gain a better understanding of the role of public institutions in this area, the expert presented the Member States’ approach to implementing EU quality policy, building on Poland’s experience in implementing GMP conformity assessment mechanisms and ex officio control.

Within the Workshop, discussions and debates were held on the current situation in the Republic of Moldova in the field of certification of products with GI and accreditation of certification bodies for these products. Also, some goals for the next period in this area have been set.

The EuropeAid/137467/DH/SER/MD Technical Assistance Project “Support to Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights” was launched in November 2016 and has a 2-year implementation period. The State Agency on Intellectual Property is the main beneficiary of the project.
