WIPO celebrated the 50-th anniversary from the creation of the international system of registration of the appellations of origin

In the period of October 30-31, 2008 in Lisbon, Portugal took place the international Forum “Geographical Indications and Appellations of Origin” organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization” (WIPO) under the support of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of Portugal. The Forum was dedicated to the 50-th anniversary of the approving the Lisbon Agreement for the protection of appellations of origin and their. international registration.

The Lisbon Agreement concluded on October 31, 1958 in the frame of the Diplomatic Conference conducted to the creation of the system of international protection and registration of the appellations of origin. The Lisbon system administered by WIPO entered in force in 1966 and today numbers 26 members-states, giving possibility to extend the protection of the origin in the member-states by a single procedure of registration.

The Republic of Moldova is the member of the Lisbon Agreement for the protection of appellations of origin and their. international registration from April 4, 2004 (Law of the Republic of Moldova No. 1328-XIV of October 27, 2000).

In the frame of the Forum there took place an exchange of views on the best practice of the Lisbon system implementation, importance of the international system of appellations of origin registration, trends of the development and necessities of reformation the system from the point of view of the last evolutions in the field of geographical indications and appellations of origin on the international level.
